Iran became predominantly Shiite through a combination of historical, political, and religious factors. The conversion of the ruling elite to Shiism in the 16th century under the Safavid dynasty played a significant role in the spread of Shiism in Iran. The Safavid rulers actively promoted Shiism as the state religion, leading to its widespread adoption among the population. Additionally, the Safavids used Shiism as a unifying force to differentiate themselves from the Sunni Ottoman Empire and to establish their own distinct identity. Over time, Shiism became deeply ingrained in Iranian society and culture, solidifying its position as the dominant branch of Islam in the country. **

Shiite Muslims break their fast a little later than Sunnis because they follow a different calculation for determining the time of sunset. Sunnis typically follow the calculation based on the physical setting of the sun, while Shiites follow a calculation based on the disappearance of the red twilight in the sky. This difference in calculation methods leads to a slight delay in the breaking of the fast for Shiite Muslims. Additionally, there may be variations in the timing of sunset based on geographical location, leading to differences in the timing of iftar (breaking the fast) between Sunni and Shiite Muslims. **
